Two committee members were invited to attend the 2016 American Academy of Orofacial Pain conference in Orlando, Florida. Some of the most interesting topics covered of relevance to the physiotherapy profession included: the latest evidence on mechanisms underlying chronic facial pain and headache; trigeminal nerve physiology and pathology; biopsychosocial management of peripherally and centrally mediated facial pain; interaction between cervical spine disorders, facial pain and headaches; and imaging for TMD.
Afterwards, an international physical therapy meeting brought together UK committee members with physiotherapists from the USA (Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial and Cervical Therapeutics – PTBCCT), the Netherlands (Dutch Association of Orofacial Physiotherapy – NVOF), and Brazil. The outcome was a plan to organise an international orofacial/TMD physiotherapy conference in 2017 in Europe. The primary aim of the conference will be to develop international standards for physiotherapy management of TMD.
